Losing a friend | author’s note

I’ve been working hard on my latest book over the past month, and the end is definitely in sight. I hope to have it finished within the next week. Sadly, just as this new book is coming together, I’ve also had the heartbreaking experience of losing a very dear pet. He was ill for some time with an infected tumor, and went downhill very quickly beginning the middle of last week. He stopped eating, and something in his eyes changed. Saturday I took him to be euthanized.

My sweet kitty, Darwin, who will be so missed

My sweet kitty, Darwin, a true friend and dear companion.

It’s still too raw to talk about much, because he was more than just a cat who lived in my house. He was a friend, companion and comfort for the past 14 years, and will be missed more than I can possibly say.

Home is a lonelier place without Darwin in it. I’ll be dedicating this next book to him, coming into existence as it is just as his life was ending. He had a good, healthy and happy one, and his passing was peaceful. But a hole has opened up within my world, and it’s hard to feel anything right now but a deep, bottomless sadness for the loss of my friend.

  1. Each one of these dear friends holds such a special place in our hearts! It is so hard to have them leave our lives!

  2. I’m so sorry. Pets love us unconditionally no matter how long they are with us. To paraphrase what someone once said, if we can’t be reunited with our pets in heaven, I don’t want to go.

  3. I so appreciate the kind thoughts – it’s been a dark time, but knowing others understand and empathize has helped in more ways than I could have imagined. Losing a pet is such a uniquely painful loss, especially since we depend on them for comfort through hurt like this. Sending thanks and good wishes to you both. -Emily
