I’ve always been an avid reader of mysteries. I prefer lighter kinds of suspense stories, with a nice helping of romance thrown in for good measure, over anything too violent, dark or gritty. As an aspiring fiction author, I realized that what I wanted more than anything else was to write that kind of book—the kind of book you curl up with on a stormy afternoon with cocoa and a blanket, or throw in with your sunblock and snacks to take down by the pool, or read far too late into the night because you just can’t put it down and HAVE to find out what happens next. Books that are satisfying and interesting and fun.
I hoard collections of battered paperbacks by Dorothy Sayers, Patricia Wentworth, Mary Stewart, Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels and Georgette Heyer—as well as Ann Bridge, J.R.R. Tolkien, Philip Pullman, L.M. Montgomery, Jane Austen and Elizabeth Cadell. A wealth of Patricia Wentworth mysteries and out-of-print Elizabeth Cadell novels have just been published on Kindle, so this summer I’ve been binging on new works by two of my favorites.
When I can turn off my insanely over-active brain and enjoy a good read, escaping from the chaotic news of the world and dramas of daily life, I consider that one of the greatest gifts and pleasures possible. If you also enjoy a lighthearted mystery, my greatest hope is that my books can give you the same pleasure so many wonderful authors have given me.
